The cube chair has a long pedigree amongst the contemporary furniture found in our homes, places of work, entertainment and food and drink outlets. Originally stylised as the Ottoman, it has invariably gone through a number of names and manifestations, including the tumpty, the hassock, the tuffet and the footstool. First imported into Europe via the Ottoman Empire in the 1700s, its first recorded mention comes from none other than Thomas Jefferson, who in 1789 recorded purchasing one "Ottomane of velours d’Utrecht".
As it stands, this latest stylised manifestation of the cube seat comes influenced by way of Morocco. A tidy, neat and charming set piece, the Marrakesh cube is perfect for indoor use, or even outside on a balcony on a dry warm day.
The patch work is reminiscent of Berber motifs found throughout Morocco and Algeria, boasting a diamond pattern. Filling is regular beanbag material, making it very comfortable for use as a footstool or as a furniture piece as part of children’s indoor play areas.
A simple yet exquisite, sophisticated and versatile addition to one’s furniture collection.
